BOCA RATON, FL - After picking up a tough loss in the season opener, the Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team bounced back with a strong performance and a 3-0 victory over IPFW Sunday.
The game was very physical on both sides, featuring five yellow cards and two red cards. The red cards were given to IPFW's Trevor Peaslee and Trent Miller.
Florida Atlantic once again took control of the game early, and held possession for a majority of the game. Samuel-Eli Dzegede clanged a shot off the post in the 14th minute, and had several other solid chances early.
The Owls finally broke through in the 37th minute, when Shire Standnes scored his first collegiate goal on a cross from Robert Bloom. Standness had just entered the game four minutes earlier as a substitution.
With the score still 1-0, goalkeeper Anders Granstad made a diving stop on IPWF's Evan Cross as he walked in all alone. It was Granstad's only save of the game.
Dzegede converted a chance in the 85th minute as he blew past a IPFW defender and was able to score on a shot along the near post.
In the 88th minute, Diego Monsalve walked in on IPFW goalkeeper Joshua Howell, was tackled hard from behind, and awarded a penalty kick. He would convert on the chance, giving the Owls a 3-0 victory. FAU is now 1-1 on the season.
FAU will now turn their attention to in-state rival Florida International University. The two teams are scheduled to play on Wednesday on FAU Field, at 7 p.m. After that game, the Owls will embark on a six game road trip, and will not see their home field again until October 4 when they welcome USF for a 7 p.m. start.
