Kelly Paiva broke the school single match record for attempts in a game as Florida Atlantic University defeated Boston College 3-2 Saturday at the Ocean Bank Invitational. The senior broke the record with 90 attempts and added 33 kills in the first match of the day. The Owls followed with a three-game sweep of the Siena Saints to improve to 12-0.
Faced with only its third five-game match of the year, the Owls managed to win the final two games against Boston College to remain undefeated. FAU posted its lowest hitting percentage of the season but used a season-high 93 digs to overtake BC (4-4). FAU also led in service aces and blocks.
Katie Arvidson tied her season-high with 19 kills and Justine Petry added 10. Five Owls finished with double-digit digs. Dimitra Samas collected a career-high 26 digs followed by libero Makra Condill's 18 digs. Paiva, Casey LaRocca and Lauren McHugh followed with 13,12 and 10 digs, repectively.
The offense returned for FAU against Siena as the team hit .319 while holding the Saints to only 36 kills and a .158 hitting percentage. Aggressive serving provided the Owls with a season-high12 service aces and kept the Saints out of their offense.
Paiva posted a career-high seven service aces and added 16 kills and only one error to lead FAU. Arvidson followed with 11 kills and Condill led the team defensively with 15 digs.
Florida Atlantic returns to action on Tuesday when it heads to UCF before returning home on Saturday to open Atlantic Sun Conference play against Mercer.
Kelly Paiva was named the tournament MVP, her fourth honor in as many weeks. Katie Arvidson and Makra Condill earned all-tournament recognition.
