Freshman Katie Arvidson led Florida Atlantic University with 10 kills and four blocks in her collegiate debut as the Owls defeated Bethune-Cookman College to open the season 30-20, 30-20, 30-19 in the FAU Invitational. Senior Kelly Paiva also collected 10 kills, while libero Makra Condill paced the Owls defensively with 21 digs.
FAU's record against the Wildcats (0-1) remains untarnished with a 26-0 series record. Florida Atlantic was able to keep B-CC on the defensive with a .241 hitting percentage and 11 service aces.
"Our aggressive serving kept Bethune-Cookman out of their offense," said head coach Jody Brown. "When you have 11 service aces and only eight service errors that is pretty good."
Condill, the A-Sun's Libero-of-the-Year in 2004 picked up four aces, while fellow defensive specialist Lauren McHugh added three.
McHugh's three aces came at the start of game three to give the Owls an early 6-0 lead and the momentum.
Four FAU hitters posted hitting percentages over .200 and six had over 10 attempts. The balanced offense gave setters Krista Klawitter and Casey LaRocca many options. "Our attacking was distributed very evenly," said Brown. The right-side hitters combined for 15 attempts in the three games. LaRocca and Klawitter finished with 21 and 17 assists, respectively
Bethune-Cookman's Irie Cormier led all players with 11 kills and finished with 10 digs.
In the first game of the tournament, Florida International defeated Stetson University 3-2.
FAU (1-0) will start day two of the FAU Invitational on Saturday against Stetson at 10 am before closing out the tournament against Florida International at 7 pm at FAU Gym.
