Boca Raton, FL - F.J. Schofield and Janine Aylward Named FAU Student Athletes of the Year Schofield and Aylward recognized at Honors Convocation
F.J. Schofield and Janine Aylward have been named Florida Atlantic University's male and female student athletes of the year and were recognized with the university's outstanding achievers at the 2004-2005 Honors Convocation.
Schofield, a senior Biological Science major on the men's tennis team, concluded his four-year Florida Atlantic career with a 62-22 record. He was a second team all-Atlantic Sun selection as both a junior and senior. The Glendale, AZ resident posted a 12-6 record in 2005 as the no. 2 player and a 17-8 record playing no. 3 in 2004. While attending FAU he was also involved with the athletic department's student athlete advisory council, volunteered at the Boca Raton Community Hospital and the "2004 Relay for Life".
"F.J. has outstanding leadership skills and essentially functioned as a coach on the court during match play," said Interim Head Coach Melissa Dawson. "He is an excellent example for the younger members of the team and athletic department of an athlete that performs at a high level, manages a challenging major and finds time to give back to his community."
Janine Aylward, a senior Education major on the women's soccer team, was also honored at the Honors Convocation. Aylward played in every game during her four-year career at Florida Atlantic, a period of time that saw the Owls capture two regular-season A-Sun Titles. The unselfish player led the squad in assists in 2004 and despite moving to a different position in 2005 she continued to find the open player with four assists. Her career totals stand with 14 goals and 15 assists for 43 points, the eighth highest total in FAU history. She is also second on the all-time assist chart and was named to the A-Sun all-conference and A-Sun all-tournament team as well as being named to the A-Sun all freshman team in 2001.
She also managed to balance her schedule with academics and community service. While at FAU the Levittown, NY native, maintained a high academic standard, volunteered as an athletic department tour guide for recruiting weekends, was a guest speaker at the Boys and Girls Club, participated in free soccer clinics, served as a volunteer coach for the Boca West girls soccer team and was a volunteer for "TOPS" soccer program, a program that works with disabled children.
"As our captain this year, Janine was asked to move to a new position and she did so without question or complaint," said head coach Brian Dooley. "That move alone showed commitment to the team above personal glory. Her teammates look to her for advice and leadership. Janine embodies what FAU women's soccer is all about."
The yearly award is bestowed upon a student who truly brings a holistic approach to college athletics. To be considered the student must have a 3.2 g.p.a, be involved in community service, and contribute to the team. Each sport nominates a member with the Athletic Department administrative staff making the final selection.
