BOCA RATON, FL - Shontavia Williams led Florida Atlantic University with 19 points as the Owls held off a late surge by Jacksonville University to preserve a 74-71 victory on Saturday evening.
The Owls set the tone early, applying full-court pressure for the majority of the first half. FAU cashed in 13 points off of 13 JU turnovers in the first session. Florida Atlantic's defense held the Dolphins to just 25 % shooting in the frame.
FAU connected on 45.5 % of its triple-tries in the first stanza in route to a 45-26 advantage at the break.
"It was good to get a win tonight, but we need more practice to keep getting better," head coach Chancellor Dugan said.
Brittney Crenshaw was a menace to the Dolphins offense getting four steals in the first half. On the offensive end she was 5-6 from with 10 points. She ended with a career-high 12 points on the night.
In the second half JU ripped off a 10-2 run to cut the Owls lead to 13, 54-41, at the 14:17 mark. The Dolphins caught fire in the second half connecting on 52 % of their attempts.
Jacksonville got within three points with 2:46 to go when Kelly Ford split a pair of free throws. FAU pushed the lead back to five as Demina Anderson scored down low and Williams cashed in a pair of charity tosses to make the score 72-67.
The Dolphins made it a two-point game, 72-70, as Ashley Williams dropped in a jump-hook in the lane with 58 seconds left.
Missy Glaser deposited two clutch free throws to give the Owls a four point edge, 74-70, with under 30 seconds left. Shenna Carpenter made it a one possession game as she split a pair of free throws to make it 74-71 with 18 seconds left.
The Dolphins had one last attempt to tie it, but Nakina Alford's three-pointer came up short.
Sheena Carpenter led all scores with 25 for the Phins. Ashley Williams dropped home 24 points in the loss.
Florida Atlantic University will return to the hardwood on Dec. 13 against Bethune-Cookman. Tip-time is set for 7 p.m.
