BOCA RATON, FL - In their final game before the Holiday, Florida Atlantic University challenged Florida State University for 40-minutes, but eventually fell to the Noles 76-63 on Saturday night.
The Owls ran with the Seminoles in the first half, trailing by four, 33-29 at the break. Shontavia Williams knocked down two triples and ended with 10 points in the stanza. She led FAU with 17 points on the night.
"We gave it a great effort out their tonight. I am really proud of the way we played all the way to the end," head coach Chancellor Dugan said.
The Owls held the Noles to 32.4 % shooting in the first frame, but FSU cashed in 10 of 13 free throw attempts. Mara Freshour led the Noles with 10 first half points and Ganiyat Adeduntan added eight points for FSU.
FAU converted 13 points off of 15 Florida State turnovers in the first-half.
In the second half Florida State turned up the defensive intensity, holding the Owls to 28.6 % shooting from the floor.
The Owls got within seven points at the 4:43 mark when Missy Glaser connected on a pair of tosses at the line. Glaser finished with a season-high 16 points and went 11 of 12 at the stripe.
Trailing by 11, 62-51, with 2:34 to play FAU was forced to foul the Noles down the stretch. Florida State dropped in 80 % (28-35) of their attempts at the line.
The Seminoles used their size advantage to win the rebounding battle 54-37. FSU scored 18 points off of second chance opportunities.
Danielle Riekeberg scored eight points in the loss and Demina Anderson added seven for Florida Atlantic University, who will return to the hardwood on Dec. 28, to battle Georgetown at FAU Arena. Tip -time is set for 7pm.
