BOCA RATON, FL -- It was a homecoming of sorts, for the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team, as they defeated North Florida, 57 - 43 at FAU Arena on Thursday for the team's first win of the season.
The game was the first the Owls have seen their true home court all season long, as they have been forced to play their first two home games at alternate locations due to damage to FAU Arena by Hurricane Wilma.
"I was real pleased with our defense and only giving up 43 points. If we can get clicking on all cylinders on offense, when that happens, it's going to be fun," head coach Chancellor Dugan said.
FAU held a 27-18 lead at the half, thanks to eight first-half points from Shontavia Williams. The Owls' cashed in 15 points off of 15 UNF turnovers in the first-half.
The Owls held their opponents to just 30% shooting from the floor in the first half, and out-rebounded the Ospreys 21-14 in the first stanza.
In the second half, Danielle Riekeberg hit a jumper with four minutes left to give the Owls their largest lead of the night, 56-36. She scored six of her eight points in the second half.
Cristal Randolph led all second-half scorers with nine points after going scoreless in the first half.
FAU held UNF's leading scorer Jackie Beik to two points, well below her 12.5 ppg average.
The Owls picked up their first win in the first Atlantic Sun conference game of the 2005-06 season, after starting the season 0-4 in non-conference play.
Williams led all scorers with 15 points on 5 of 10 shooting. Demina Anderson led the Owls with six rebounds. They held the Ospreys to 30% from the floor overall.
FAU returns to action Saturday at FAU Arena, when they take on A-Sun rival Jacksonville. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
