On Sunday afternoon, the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team closed out the regular season with a 3-0 win over UCF. Casey LaRocca broke the FAU single season assists record with 44 assists in the match to bring her season total to 1259. The mark breaks the old record set in 2002 by Jeana Boyle.
LaRocca (St. Louis, MO) helped the Owls to the 30-28, 30-25, 30-24 sweep of the Golden Knights (8-17) with 44 assists and two service aces, while guiding the FAU offense to a .246 hitting percentage. Kelly Paiva (Minas Gerais, Brazil) and Janelle Sarauw (St. Thomas, V.I.) were her favorite targets in the contest. Paiva finished with 20 kills and a .486 hitting percentage by only committing three errors. Sarauw finished with 10 kills and added four blocks.
Justine Petry (Trumansburg, NY) added six blocks of her own as Florida Atlantic finished with 10 blocks in the win.
FAU's defense compiled 51 digs compared to UCF's 38. Makra Condill (Crystal Lake, IL) finished with 15 and Paiva added 10 as the team improved to 27-2.
The Owls have won 11 straight matches heading into the conference tournament this weekend in Nashville, TN. The squad enters the tournament as the no. 1 seed and will play the winner of the Lipscomb/Mercer match at 5:30 pm et.
