BOCA RATON, FL -- It took longer than expected, but thanks to Javier Carrillo's goal in the second overtime the Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team picked up its fourth win of the season on Sunday, 2-1 over Jacksonville.
The Owls (4-6-0) led 1-0 for a majority of the game thanks to Ran Poliker's goal in the 12th minute of play. With 10 seconds left in regulation and the ball at midfield, it looked like FAU would come out of their first conference match with a shutout victory.
The Dolphins would play the ball up the right side before crossing it in front of keeper Anders Granstad. The ball hit a body in front and lay in front of the net, then was struck hard by Jacksonville reserve Akeem Priestley, and rolled over the goal-line with less than a second left in regulation.
The teams would play a back-and-forth first overtime, with FAU registering the only shot on goal. Carrillo would score his sixth goal of the season in the 102nd minute.
FAU's previous two games, including the scheduled conference opener against North Florida, had been postponed due to rain.
The Owls will face Stetson in Boca Raton on Thursday at 7 p.m., as the conference schedule continues.
