BOCA RATON, FL -- Tough-nosed defense and a pair of second-half goals spurred Florida Atlantic University past Stetson University in men's soccer Thursday, 2-0.
The teams played a scoreless first half, but the Owls held the edge in shots on goal, 3-1. The Hatters had good pressure, but struggled to get the ball through to keeper Anders Granstad.
Leonardo De Mata ran past a pair of Hatter defenders and beat keeper Jeff Smeraglinolo on a shot from the left side for a 1-0 lead just 1:24 into the second-half. A great defensive play led to a breakaway for Diego Monsalve, who scored in the 85th minute to put the game away for the Owls.
The win keeps the Owls (5-6-0, 2-0-0) among the leaders in the Atlantic Sun conference standings.
Granstad made two stops for his fourth shutout of the season, tops among A-Sun keepers. The shutout is the 11th of his career.
The Owls will travel to Mercer on Sunday for a 1 p.m. start.
