BOCA RATON, FL - Katri Nokso-Koivisto buried a shot from just inside the box and the defense held on as the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team edged Central Florida 1-0 on Sunday.
The Owls were able to catch the Golden Knight defense scrambling in their own end, when Susanna Lehtinen passed from the far corner to Nokso-Koivisto, who drilled a shot past starting goalkeeper Beth Harless.
Megan Coyne got the start and continued her strong play. She made three saves in the first-half. Jessica Badders came out for the second half, and made a pair of clutch stops.
FAU had plenty of opportunities to increase their score, including a shot by Cristina Rodriguez that hit the crossbar in the 40th minute. In the second-half, Ashley Mannarino had a chance to make it 2-0 in the 62nd minute, but her chip over the keeper was knocked away by a UCF defender just before it crossed the goal-line.
The match was very physical, featuring 29 total fouls, 18 by UCF.
The win upped the Owls record to 8-3-1. Their non-conference schedule is now complete. They finished 5-3-0 in non-conference games.
FAU's next contest will come Thursday at 7 p.m. when they welcome Campbell to FAU Field, as the heart of the conference schedule begins.
