BOCA RATON, FL -- Denise Brolly's penalty kick goal in the first minute and a suffocating defense led the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team to a conference win over Campbell University Thursday night.
The game was dominated by the Owls, as they controlled the ball for a majority of the time, especially in the first-half.
Monique Cabrera would give the Owls (9-3-1, 4-0-1) all the insurance they would need, thanks to a great individual effort. She took the ball from a Camel defender, spun off and fired a shot past keeper Samar Azem.
The FAU defense would do the rest, as they allowed only one shot attempt that was well high of the goal.
Jessica Badders got the start for the Owls between the pipes. She played the first half and wasn't forced to make a save. Megan Coyne took over in the second period and also was not called on to make a stop. Badders earned the victory, improving her personal record to 4-2-0. Coyne extended her shutout streak to 390 minutes, lowering her NCAA best goals-against average to 0.14.
The shutout is FAU's ninth of the year. They are now just two shy of the program's record 11 set in 2002.
Up next for Florida Atlantic is Gardner-Webb. The game is scheduled for a noon start as the first half of a men's and women's soccer double-header.
