BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's women's soccer team prepares to face its toughest competition this weekend as the Lady Owls welcome the University of Georgia on Friday at 7 pm and No. 3 Florida State University on Sunday at 1 pm. FAU (1-1) faces both teams for the second time in program history.
The Lady Owls opened the season with a 3-0 win over Louisiana-Lafayette and a 2-1 overtime loss to Northeastern. Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Coyne recorded the first shutout of her career against the Rajun' Cajuns and has only allowed two goals in 187 minutes (0.96 goals-against average). Kari Fernandez is halfway to her 2003 goal total after scoring the game-winning goal in the 3-0 win over Louisiana-Lafayette. Going back to last season, Fernandezs' last three goals have all been game-winners. Christina Chang leads the team with three points (1 goal, 1 assist) as four different players have scored goals for FAU.
Georgia (0-0-2), ranked 11th in the southeast region by Soccerbuzz, is still looking for its first win after tying no. 23 Colorado 0-0 and fellow Atlantic Sun conference member Georgia State 1-1 in a rain shortened game. The Bulldogs are coming off a 13-10 season, which included a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Georgia has a relatively young team, as only seven members of the 25-player roster are juniors or seniors. Cortni Joyner leads the team with two points (1 goal). UGA holds a 1-0 series lead over FAU, defeating the Lady Owls 5-0 in 1995.
FSU (2-0) is coming off of two big wins over Pac-10 opponents Arizona State and Southern California. The Seminoles defeated No. 15 ASU 3-2 in their season opener. Forward Julia Schnugg scored two goals while midfielder Camie Bybee recorded a goal and an assist. FSU later avenged last season's opening loss to USC, defeating the Trojans 2-1 on Sunday afternoon as Jez Ratliff and Katie Beal scored for the Seminoles. The win moved FSU to 2-0 for the first time since 2001 and gave head coach Patrick Baker the 70th win of his FSU career. The Seminoles met the Lady Owls for the first time in 2003, handing FAU its worst loss since 1995. Leah Gallegos, First-Team All-America, scored four goals in the 7-0 win.
Season ticket packages can still be purchased. Adult packages begin at $30 for 10 adult tickets while individual ticket prices will be $4 for adults and $2 for seniors/children. Call 866-FAU-OWLS for more information on how you can get tickets for the 2004 Lady Owls soccer season.
