BOCA RATON, FL - Former Florida Atlantic softball players Nikki Myers and Heather Wright are playing for the Akron Racers of the National Pro Fastpitch softball league (NPF). Both completed careers at FAU in 2002. Myers finished her four-year career third in NCAA history with 1,376 strikeouts. The two were seniors on a 2002 Owls team that set a school record with 62 wins and earned FAU's first no. 1 seed at an NCAA Regional.
The Racers are one of six team's in the league that features 60 regular season games running from June through mid-August. The NPF is the nation's only women's professional fastpitch softball league.
In addition, Callie Piper, who completed her elligibility in 2004, is playing for the Stratford (CT) Brakettes of the Amateur Softball Association (ASA). Piper was drafted by the New York/New Jersey Juggernaut of the NPF in December 2003.
The Brakettes are the two-time defending ASA National Champions and have won 25 titles all-time. They are managed by FAU assistant coach John Stratton.
