BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's Candice Freel has received Lousiville Slugger/NFCA Second-Team All-Region honors. The selection comes as a result of voting by National Fastpitch Coaches Association members from the Southeast Region. Freel has helped lead the Owls to their eighth straight Atlantic Sun Conference championship and sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
The junior from Corvallis, OR, leads FAU in virtually every pitching category. She has a 27-9 record and 16 shutouts to go along with one of the nation's best ERAs at 0.69.
Freel was most recently named the MVP of the A-Sun Championship where she pitched 38 and two-thirds innings with a 0.36 ERA. She pitched the final 31 and two-thirds innings of the championship, including three consecutive shutouts. She is 21-3 since the beginning of March. Freel is also the A-Sun Pitcher-of-the-Year.
Her 27 wins is a new career best while her 72 career victories rank second in FAU history. She is the first Owl to receive regional honors since Nikki Myers in 2001 and 2002.
Freel is trying to lead the Owls to their first trip to the College World Series as Florida Atlantic continues play at the Lincoln Regional this week. FAU faces either Mississippi State or Iowa Friday night at 7:00pm EDT. All of the games can be heard live on www.fausports.com.
