BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's Candice Freel and Pam Mazzarella have swept the weekly softball honors handed down by the Atlantic Sun Conference. Freel was named A-Sun Pitcher-of-the-Week while Mazzarella was selected Player-of-the-Week. The two have played critical roles in FAU winning the A-Sun regular season championship as it prepares for this week's A-Sun Championship.
Freel was sensational in two appearances last week. The junior from Corvallis, OR, pitched two extra inning shutouts, including an 11-inning no-hitter with 20 strikeouts against UCF. Her first game was a 10-inning three-hitter at Jacksonville on May 3. In that game, Freel struck out eight and walked one while scattering three singles. Freel finished the year with a conference-high four pitcher-of-the-week awards.
Against UCF on Wednesday, she fanned a career-high 20 while not allowing a hit as FAU won the first of two dramatic 1-0 games against UCF to surpass the Golden Knights in the standings and claim the regular season championship. The no-hitter was Freel's second this season and third of her career. She leads FAU with a 24-7 record and a 0.68 ERA. She has thrown 29 consecutive scoreless innings and is 18-1 with a 0.32 ERA since March 6.
Mazzarella continued as one of the hottest hitters in the nation. The junior from Brookfield, CT, went 5-for-7 in three games last week. She drove in a run in her only at-bat in the first game of the doubleheader at Jacksonville. She then went 4-for-6 in the sweep of UCF. In her last 19 at-bats, Mazzarella has 14 hits. She's batting .568 since April 4, raising her team-leading average to .384. The honor was Mazzarella's second of the year.
Florida Atlantic (50-15) next sets its sights on the A-Sun Championship, a tournament it has won a record seven straight years. FAU is the top-seed and hosts the event May 13-15 at FAU Field. The Owls face Gardner-Webb Thursday at 1:00pm in opening round action. For tournament information, please visit www.fausports.com.
