Softball Faces Big Weekend at Home

BOCA RATON, FL - As it continues its quest for an eighth straight conference title, Florida Atlantic University will take part in two critical Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheaders this weekend at FAU Field in Boca Raton. The Owls host Mercer Friday at 6:00pm before taking on Georgia State Sunday at 1:00pm.
FAU enters the weekend with a 40-13 record overall and a 7-1 mark in the A-Sun. Stetson leads the A-Sun with a 9-1 record while Troy State and UCF are tied for second-place with 10-2 marks. Mercer is in fifth place at 9-3. FAU is the only A-Sun team receiving mention in the national polls. The Owls are receiving votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball and USA Today/NFCA Top-25 polls.
The Owls are led at the plate by Pam Mazzarella and Jessica Sachs. Mazzarella is batting .341 and leads the team with 10 doubles. Sachs is hitting .335 with a team-high 57 hits as well as five home runs. In the circle, Candice Freel has been dominant. The junior is riding a 13-game winning streak and is 19-6 with a conference-leading 0.85 ERA.
FAU has posted a 25-4 record since the beginning of March. During the stretch, the Owls have posted 12 shutouts and a 12-1 mark in one-run games. The Owls have 12 regular season games left before hosting the A-Sun Championship May 13-15.
