BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University defeated Northern Iowa, 2-0, before falling to Rhode Island, 3-1, Saturday on the second day of action at the FAU Worth Doubletree Classic in Boca Raton, FL. FAU (24-11) faces Northern Iowa Sunday morning at 9:00am with the winner advancing to the championship game at 1:00pm.
Against UNI, FAU scored its first run in the second inning when Callie Piper reached base on a scoring error. In the top of the fifth, Piper led off with a single and was replaced by Lauren Evans. Evans advanced to second on a sacrifice and scored a throwing error on a groundout by Jessica Sachs.
Candice Freel won her fourth straight game with a three-hit shutout. The junior struck out nine and walked three and improved to 10-6 on the year. She lowere her team-leading ERA to 0.98.
Rhode Island never trailed as it scored two runs in the top of the second inning. In the fourth, Amy Bellisari singled to drive in Jenn Piazza to make it 2-1. Nicole Haywood homered in the sixth to account for the game's final score.
Amanda Morin (10-5) suffered the loss. The sophomore allowed three runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
The winner of the FAU-UNI game will face either Rhode Island or Manhattan in the championship game.
