BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team will host the 2004 FAU Thanksgiving Classic this weekend. The Lady Owls will welcome James Madison, Morehead State, and Youngstown State to FAU Gymnasium for the two-day event. JMU takes on Morehead State in the first game Friday at 5:00pm. FAU will then face Youngstown State in its home opener at 7:00pm. Saturday's schedule features a consolation game at 5:00pm and the championship at 7:00pm.
FAU enters the tournament 0-2 after losses on the road to Middle Tennessee and Tennessee Tech. FAU dropped an 85-63 decision to Middle Tennessee in its season opener November 19. Two days later, TTU downed the Lady Owls, 81-65. Jackie Brown leads the team with 17.5 points per game while Cristal Randolph is second with 13.0ppg. Randolph has connected on eight of her 11 three-point attempts.
Youngstown State (1-1) won its season opener, 76-59, at St. Louis and lost to Ohio on Tuesday, 85-79. The Penguins finished 4-24 last year and 2-14 in the Horizon League. JMU (0-1) lost to Virginia Tech Tuesday in its season opener, 80-67. The Dukes posted a 13-18 record in 2003-04 and were tied for 7th in the Colonial Athletic Association with a 7-11 record. Morehead State (0-1) lost its season opener on Sunday, 74-58, to Wright State. They finished 10-18 overall and 7-9 in the Ohio Valley Conference a year ago.
FAU's meeting with Youngstown State will be its first. The Lady Owls have also never faced James Madison. FAU has only played Morehead State once, a 68-66 victory November 24, 2000, at the Texas State Classic.
