BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University opens its 2004-05 regular season Friday night at Middle Tennessee State. The game is scheduled to tip at 6:30pm EST at the Murphy Center in Murfreesboro, TN. It's the first meeting between the two schools.
FAU returns nine players from last year's team including four of its top-five scorers. Shontavia Williams, a junior, leads the core of returning players, averaging 12.5 points and 5.4 rebounds in 2003-04 as a sophomore. Jackie Brown, a senior, averaged 7.9 points and 4.7 rebounds last season. FAU also returns the most accurate three-point shooter in school history in Sharia Young. The junior holds a .408 percentage from beyond the arc over her first two seasons. She went a perfect 4-for-4 in FAU's only exhibition game.
MTSU (0-1), the defending Sun Belt Conference champions, lost to South Florida, 70-62, on November 12 in the Preseason WNIT. The Lady Raiders are receiving votes in both the Associated Press and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Polls. Middle Tennessee played in last year's NCAA Tournament and upset 12th-ranked North Carolina in the first round.
Florida Atlantic faces Tennessee Tech on Sunday to close out the road trip. The Lady Owls return home to host the FAU Thanksgiving Classic November 26-27 at FAU Gymnasium.
