BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women's golf team opens the fall season Friday at the 2004 Pat Bradley Women's Golf Championship at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa. This is the ninth consecutive year that FAU has participated in the event and last won the tournament in 2001. The Lady Owls return six from last year and welcome four newcomers to this year's squad.
FAU will be led by Jessica Carafiello. The senior from Coral Springs, FL, was one of three golfers to participate in every tournament last year, finishing second on the team with a 79.11 scoring average and recording five top-10 finishes. Carafiello will be joined by returnees Sandi MacDougall, Kendall Kirby, Maria Gutierrez, Ashley Hall and Page Maltby. MacDougall played in seven tournaments, completing 19 rounds, and finished with an 86.68 scoring average. Kirby and Gutierrez are the only remaining starters who participated last season.
The Lady Owls welcome four new players, June Bolme, Julie Cline, Anna-Claire Daniels and Whitney Weydig. Bolme is a three-year member of the Norwegian National Team and took home first place honors at the Norwegian National Championship in 2004 and 2002. She finished the 2002 season ranked No.1 on the Norwegian Junior Tour. Weydig was the 2003 Central New York (CNY) PGA champion as well as the Mohawk Valley Junior Golf champion in 2002-03.
FAU participates in the first of its four fall tournaments as host Florida International University looks to defend its title against 15 schools on the 6,072-yard par 72 course. Last year's runner-up, Princeton University, also returns.
