Boca Raton, FL - "Get Carded Day." It's probably not what you think. In fact, it's quite the contrary. Sometimes, because of all of the negative things going on in the world, we are oblivious to the positive things that might be going on right under our noses. One of these positive things is happening right here at FAU with our athletes! It is the CHAMPS/LIFESKILLS program, and "Get Carded Day", is just one of the many outreach programs that stem from this awesome plan.
Jacqui Shuman has a "passion" for athletes. She has a passion for them to succeed in all areas of their lives, on and off the field. Because of this, she has taken charge of the CHAMPS/LIFESKILLS program and is excited about what it can do to help our athletes excel both academically and athletically. Even more so, she is eager to help propel them into the successful individuals they have the potential to be when they leave their college careers. That is what this program is all about.
The NCAA sponsored program "focuses on the whole person... not just the athlete, and helps to transition them from college in to real life." The components are Athletics and Academics, and then Community Outreach, Career Development, and Personal Development. The "Get Carded Day" was something they had on campus where athletes handed out cards with tips for men and women to avoid being sexually assaulted, raped, or victimized. The response was very positive is just one of the many things that they have planned with this program.
On another note, the athletes prepare for life outside of college by being exposed to mock interviews, resume and cover letter practice, and the building of a career network for their future. This is a great way to help ensure the success and morality of our community also.
No wonder Jacqui loves to be a part of this wonderful program that has been put in place for our athletes. It involves, teachers, coaches, parents and community leaders working together to help our student athletes come out on top. It helps them to realize their special talents, opportunities, and responsibilities, and we are very proud of how it is working for all involved here at FAU!
