Florida Atlantic University's football team ended the 2003 season ranked no. 4 nationally by Sports Network.
The Owls ended the 2003 campaign with an 11-3 record and etched themselves in the record books for the youngest start-up program to advance to the NCAA play-off. FAU played its first two play-off games on the road by first eliminating Bethune-Cookman, in Daytona, and then Northern Arizona, in Flagstaff, AZ, where they eliminated host NAU. The Owls then returned home to host Colgate, who walked away from Lockhart Stadium with a 21 game win-streak.
While the 2003 season was both historic and exciting for the young Owl Football program, it will be the final season FAU will compete at the Divison I-AA level. Just prior to the play-offs the University made the announcement to join the Sun Belt Conference and its intentions to study the feasibility of the football team joining the remaining 16 sports as a full member of NCAA Division IA.
