BOCA RATON, FL -- Florida Atlantic University will host the 2003 FAU/Embassy Suites Classic beginning Friday and running through Saturday. FAU will be joined by Manhattan, Middle Tennessee State, and Norfolk State. First round games on Friday include Manhattan vs MTSU at 5:00pm followed by FAU vs NSU at 7:00pm.
FAU (0-1) enters the tournament with an 0-1 record after being defeated last Friday at home, 73-62, by Georgia Tech. Trineca McCleod and DeeAnna Hanscom were the Lady Owls' leading scorers. McCleod tossed in 16 points, and Hanscom added 13.
NSU (0-1) and Manhattan (1-0) also enter the tournament with just one game played so far. NSU was defeated by Monmouth, 60-51, on Saturday. Dekisha Thompson led the Spartans with 14 points. Manhattan defeated Central Florida, 68-47, Saturday at home. Rosalee Mason led all scorers with 21 points while three other Jaspers scored in double-figures.
MTSU comes in with a 2-0 record with wins over Tennessee Tech and Southern Illinois. The Lady Raiders are led by Patrice Holmes, who averaged 23.0 points in the wins and was named the Sun Belt Conference Player-of-the-Week.
The tournament concludes Saturday with a 5:00pm consolation and a 7:00pm championship. The games for FAU will continue a stretch of four consecutive home games to start the season as the Lady Owls host Central Florida December 4.
