Tallahassee, FL - Playing three games in five days and down two starters, Florida Atlantic University's women's soccer team saw its eight-game winning streak come to a halt as the team was defeated 7-0 by no. 9 Florida State Monday evening in the first meeting between the two universities. The loss marks the first defeat in the month of October since October 25, 2000. With the loss, FAU fell to 15-4 while FSU improved to 11-5-1.
The Seminoles tallied three goals in the first 19 minutes to take a commanding 3-0 lead that the Lady Owls would not overcome. Leah Gallegos scored the first of her four goals nine minutes in when her shot from the far left win sailed past Molly Keating to the far side of the net.
Florida Atlantic settled down after the third goal and kept FSU scoreless until the 63rd minute when Gallegos put in the rebound of a Julia Schnugg shot to make the score 4-0. One minute later India Trotter split the defense with a through pass to Gallegos who put it away for her fourth goal. The Tribe would score two more goals in the next minute to extend the lead 7-0.
FAU was outshot by FSU 25-4. Keating recorded seven saves while freshman Megan Coyne recorded two saves and allowed one goal in 22 minutes.
The Lady Owls now have their sights set on the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, which starts November 6 on the main campus of FAU. The team clinched at least the second seed with a 3-1 win against Troy State on Sunday afternoon and could take the top seed with a Campbell loss to Gardner-Webb on Wednesday. Florida Atlantic also clinched its second consecutive A-Sun regular season title with the win against TSU. For ticket information call 866-FAU-OWLS.
