BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's women's soccer team will play three games in a five day span to conclude the regular season. FAU (13-3, 8-1 A-Sun), ranked eighth in the Southeast Region by Soccer Buzz magazine, plays Colorado College on Thursday at 6 pm in the first game of a double-header with the men's soccer team. The Lady Owls will then travel to Troy, AL to play Troy State on Sunday at 2 pm in the team's last Atlantic Sun match of the season. The team plays FSU, ranked fifth and sixth in the Southeast Region by Soccer Buzz and the NSCAA, on Monday at 7pm in Tallahassee.
Florida Atlantic is riding the hot feet of a defensive unit that has not allowed a goal in its past six games. The Lady Owls are ranked fourth in the nation in goals-against average (0.428) while senior Molly Keating is ranked eighth with a 0.469 GAA. The team has allowed only seven goals in 16 games and two goals in nine A-Sun matches.
Although the defense has been unstoppable, the offense has hit its late-season stride. The Lady Owls have averaged 3.00 goals per game in their last six games, outscoring their opponents 18-0. Rhonda Jones and Christina Chang have led the charge, combining for nine goals and six assists. Jones leads the team with seven goals and 17 points, tying a career high for both. Chang, a freshman from Cooper City, FL, is second on the team with six goals and 14 points but leads the team with three game-winning goals. With her assist on the first goal of the 4-0 win against Jacksonville, Danielle Castro tied Melissa Bobby and Rhonda Jones as the all-time assists leader.
Colorado College (6-7-2) will meet FAU for the first time in program history. The Tigers have dropped only two of their last six outings (3-2-1) and travel to sunny Florida this week to conclude a four-game road swing. Colorado College is led offensively by Kelly Sweitzer (six goals and two assists) and defensively by goalkeeper Meghann Loseke (1.20 GAA).
TSU (8-7, 3-5 A-Sun) will play Central Florida on Friday before taking on FAU. The Lady Owls are a perfect 4-0 against the Trojans, defeating them 13-2 with three shutouts over that span. Last season, Lauren Lucena recorded two assists while Jones, Castro and Danielle DiLeo all contributed to the 5-0 win. Jenna Mosher, second in the A-Sun in goals scored, leads the TSU offensive attack. With a win against the Torjans, FAU can clinch at least a number three seed in the A-Sun women's soccer championship.
Florida Atlantic will also be playing FSU (9-5-1) for the first time in program history. This marks the fifth new opponent this year the Lady Owls have played. The Lady Seminoles recently defeated Clemson University 3-0 and tied No. 12 Wake Forrest 0-0 and are 8-1-1 after starting the season 1-4. Three Noles have recorded five or more goals with Leah Gallegos leading the way with 10 goals. First-year starter Joy McKenzie has recorded a 0.86 GAA with four shutouts in 11 starts.
The Lady Owls will return home to play in the 2003 Atlantic Sun Women's Soccer Championship starting November 6. For ticket information, call 866-FAU-OWLS.
