Florida Atlantic University defeated Western Carolina 1-0, in the final game of the Marriott Kick-off Classic. Kelly Hoffman scored with three minutes left in the first half for the game winning goal and Molly Keating had six saves for her first shutout of the season. The Lady Owls are now 1-1-0 on the season.
Defensively, the Lady Owls dominated the Catamounts offensive attack. Led by Janine Alyward, FAU smothered their opponents and kept them away from inside the box. In turn, the defense allowed only six shots with only two coming in the entire second half.
"Today, we put Janine back there because Didi was a little banged with her hamstring and she looked like she started to lag a little bit so we made that change. And Janine came in and contributed and actually effected a change in the game," said Head Coach Brian Dooley. "And that's what we talked about, when it's your chance effect the change in the game, be positive to the teamwork and Janine actually did that today."
The Lady Owls started the game with nice ball movement and were able to make numerous runs on goal down the side of the field. Forwards Trina Maso de Moya, Brandi Herrmann and Danielle DiLeo did a nice job of pressuring the defense of the Catamounts into mistakes. And as time was running down in the first half, FAU was able to capitalize on their mistakes. After a bad clear by Western Carolina, Julie Ferguson, who has a two-game point streak, dribbled down the left side moving her way through defenders to the goal line. She spotted an open Hoffman just beyond the arch of the box and struck a pin-point pass to her. Hoffman lined up her shot and hit a screamer to the far-post that flew by the outstretch arms of Western Carolina keeper Mandy Tinsley, into the back of the net. The goal marked the first game-winner of her career as a Lady Owl.
Maso de Moya continued her shooting spree by shooting eight shots, more than the entire Catamount team, including four headers. She now has totaled 13 shots in two games and has shown that the rust of not playing soccer in four years has begun to wear off.
The Lady Owls resume play Sunday, September 8th versus UCF in Orlando, Florida, in their first conference match of the season. FAU returns home October 8th against conference foe University of Belmont.
