MACON, GA - Florida Atlantic University's hopes in repeating as Atlantic Sun Conference champions were ended Saturday afternoon in a 4-3 loss to Georgia State University in a semifinal match at the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament. The loss drops FAU to 17-5 on the year.
The match started off well for the no. 55 Owls, who won two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Ernest Diaz and Martin Jirak teamed at no. 3 to take the first victory. After GSU won at no. 2, Doug Devriendt and Cristian Paiz defeated GSU's Luka Bernard and Pablo Perez Gras, 8-4, to clinch the doubles point.
The Panthers stormed back in singles play. Perez Gras tied the match at 1-1 when he defeated FAU's Sandro Spotti in straight sets at no. 3. Less than five minutes later, Matias Ormaza followed with a two-set victory at no. 1 over Devriendt to give GSU a 2-1 lead.
Not to be outdone, FAU came back to tie the score at 2-2 when Jirak defeated Albano Franco 6-4, 6-2 at no. 2. When Paiz followed with a straight sets victory over Miha Lisac at no. 5, FAU had regained the lead at 3-2, needing just one more singles win to clinch the victory.
Two minutes after Paiz's victory, Nicolas Lupica defeated Diaz at no. 6 to tie the match at 3-3.
It would take another forty minutes to decide the outcome as FAU's Andre Buzzoni and Bernard were battling late in the third set of their match. Buzzoni fought off two match points to eventually force the set into a tiebreaker. In an odd start to the decisive tiebreaker, the first seven points were not won on serve. With the score tied 5-5, Bernard won the final two points to clinch the individual and team victory.
GSU moves on to face Central Florida in Sunday's championship match. Florida Atlantic will now await the possibility of receiving and at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The tournament field will be announced May 2.
