Q: What event/moment at UNLV had an impact on your life as a man/husband/father. How have passed it along to your players? What part of coaching fulfills you as a person?
A: The most important moment that comes to mind first and foremost was when I made my decision to attend UNLV and put all my trust into coach Tarkanian and the school. I had two dreams when I went to college, one to get my degree, and two to become a professional basketball player. Coach Tarkanian and UNLV helped me achieve both of those goals.
One thing I pass along to my players based on that experience is to not believe what everyone says or thinks about somebody. I tell them to make certain to construct their own opinions when it comes to people. Many naysayers said that by me attending UNLV I would not be successful because of the bad environment and reputation that coach Tarkanian was wrongfully labeled with at that time (1979). If you follow your heart and instincts, instead of going by what other people say or feel about a particular individual or subject, you will be successful. I try to remind my players to use their instincts every day.
The teaching part, being able to shape and direct kids lives in a positive way.
Q: As an FAU alumni (1997), why aren't FAU men's basketball shorts made available for purchase?
A: Elan, that is something I personally can not answer. You are about the 100th person to ask me, unfortunately that is outside my realm. I am sure our marketing department can be of better help to you so feel free to contact them.
Q: I'm a freshman at Northeast High School and I play basketball. I'd like to know what drills I should do to make myself a better player and maybe get a scholarship. Thank you and get back soon. Good luck this season.
A: David, feel free to contact our coaching staff and we will be happy to provide you with some fundamental drills to help you continue to improve your skills.
Q: What happened to David Richardson coach? I heard he's still at F.A.U. will he get an opportunity to play next year because I've heard he is one of your best players and he isn't even on the team right now!
A: David Richardson was a walk-on nonscholarship athlete that wasn't recruited for our program. I was very proud of David for making our team two years ago. However, David, his family, and I thought it would be best for him to focus more on his academics and fulfilling his obligations to his studies. Hopefully next year he will try it again and possibly make the team.
Q: It is early in your season so I am not sure if you will be able to answer this question just yet: Does your team seem to have more determination, drive, and hunger to make this year even better than last year?
A: Ever since I started coaching, all of my teams have exhibited the determination, drive, and hunger to succeed. Some seasons we may have not had as much talent but we have always had the hunger, determination, and drive. This year is no different, our team isn't trying to reinvent the wheel we are just playing, practicing, and coaching as hard as we possibly can.
