DAYTON, Ohio – Florida Atlantic men's basketball fell to Wright State on the road Friday night at the Nutter Center, 97-71, dropping the Owls' record to 1-1 on the early season.
THE BEGINNING
The Raiders (2-0) held a three-point lead a little more than two minutes in, but scored the next 12 to move out to a 19-4 advantage. Back-to-back baskets by
Felipe Quinones nearly got it to single digits, but the home team responded with a 12-4 run.
THE TURNING POINT
The Owls scored nine of the last 13 points of the first half to make it a 47-28 game at the break. Two
Kanaan Carlyle free throws started the second half scoring, but again, WSU had a run in them, this time seven straight.
THE FINISH
The FAU offense began to click after the first second half media timeout. Carlyle hit his second 3-pointer of the half and then
Mason Porter-Brown scored eight of the team's next nine points (on an old-fashioned three-point play, a 3-pointer of his own and a steal and breakaway dunk). That last basket cut the deficit back down to 17, 65-48, at 12:18.
Another Carlyle make from distance soon thereafter trimmed it to 16, but the Owls were unable to get any closer.
NOTABLES
- Carlyle had his second 20-point effort in as many games, with a game-high 25. He went 6-of-12 from the field, 4-for-6 from long range and a perfect 9-for-9 from the line.
- Porter-Brown joined him in double digits with 13, 11 of which came in the second half. He also had four of FAU's six steals.
- Quinones had nine points and six rebounds, both team highs, at the half before finishing with 11 and nine, along with four assists.
- David Musis and Matthew "Matas" Puodziukaitis each made their FAU debut, and each scored. Fawaz "Tacko" Ifaola also scored his first points as an Owl.
- The first nine Owls that saw the floor all got their name into the scoring column.
