A pitching dual made for a two hour and ten minute game as the number five seed Florida Atlantic University (35-22) beat number two Stetson University (41-14) for the first time this season 2-1.
Petersen Benjamin (7-5), Second Team All-Conference, pitched a complete game striking out seven, giving up only seven hits, one earned run and no walks. In the second inning Benjamin gave up two consecutive singles to Bryan Zenchyk and Brian Snyder. A fielder's choice by Andy Wilson advanced Zenchyk to third. The fourth batter of the inning, Vinnie Rinaldi, drove a double off the wall in center field above a leaping Gabe Somarriba to score the only run for Stetson.
FAU was able to get seven hits off of the Hatter's pitcher, Lenny DiNardo. Florida Atlantic only needed two runs in the fourth inning to pull off the upset. L.J. Biernbaum started the offense with his only hit of the game, a single through the right side. With two out, Rusty Brown got the only two RBI for Florida Atlantic as he drove a homer over the left field fence. Brown had an impressive game as he went three-for-four against the Stetson ace.
FAU will play the winner of Jacksonville/Campbell at 7 pm Thursday in the second round of the TAAC Tournament in Jacksonville, FL.
