Boca Raton - A team that has become accustomed to repeats, with five consecutive Trans America Athletic Conference titles and three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, has accomplished a first. Seniors Kim Nicosia (of) and Chris Sutcliffe (p) have been named to the Verizon Academic All-America District 3 team and will be considered on the national ballot.
The honor is awarded to players who have above a 3.2 cumulative g.p.a., who have been in residence for more than one year at their respective institution, and who are involved at both the University and in the community. Nominees are then voted upon by all the region's sports information directors.
Nicosia posted a 3.22 g.p.a. as an education major. She has been a member of the Lady Owls each of the last four seasons and has served as team captain three years. She also represents the Trans America Athletic Conference on the Student Athlete Counsel and is instrumental in the FAU student-athlete outreach program. Nicosia was an All-Tournament selection at both the 1998 and 2001 TAAC Championship.
Sutcliffe posted a 3.35 g.p.a. as an undergraduate while graduating in May of 2000 with a degree in math. She is currently working on her master's degree as part of the FAU Genesis program and will graduate in August with a master's degree in education. She holds a 4.0 g.p.a in post-graduate studies and recently accepted the position of head softball coach at Boynton Beach High School, which will begin a new program in 2002. Sutcliffe has received All-Tournament honors at three TAAC Championships while being named most valuable player in 1997. She is the only Lady Owl to be on every conference championship team and has served as the team's captain the last three seasons.
The honor comes just two days before the duo will lead FAU in the NCAA Regional in Tallahassee.
