MACON, GA - L.J. Biernbaum, who leads Florida Atlantic University in home runs with 13 and is second on the squad with 13 doubles, has been named to the 2001 Trans America Athletic Conference baseball first team.
The junior outfielder was joined by senior pitcher, Petersen Benjamin and junior DH Mike Valdes. Benjamin has posted a 2.60 ERA and will take the mound in FAU's first round of the TAAC Tournament, hosted by Jacksonville. FAU will face Stetson 2 pm, Wednesday in the tournament's first round. Valdes, who has a team leading .389 average, is expected to play first.
For the first time in baseball, the TAAC is also honoring freshmen. Rusty Brown, who will play third, was named to the all-freshman team as a third baseman. Brown has also seen time in 2001 as a first basemen, second basemen and as an outfielder. Joining Brown on the all-freshman team was pitcher Chris Pillsbury. Pillsbury has been a starter, but most recently has been strong out of the pen. Pillsbury is 4-4 on the season.
