MACON, GA - Florida Atlantic University claimed its first Trans America Athletic Conference championship Sunday with a 4-0 victory over Central Florida in the title match. With the win, FAU gains an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The match began with FAU quickly winning the first point with two doubles victories. At no. 2, Doug Devreindt and Cristian Paiz defeated UCF's Catalin Bradu and Johan Westin, 8-2. Shortly thereafter, FAU's Yalin Bilgin and Martin Jirak disposed of Federico Camacho and William Guerin, 8-2, at no. 1.
In singles play, Sandro Spotti gave the Owls a 2-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Augusto Sanabria at no. 5. Bilgin followed at no. 2 with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Guerin before Doug Devriendt clinched the championship with a 7-6, 6-1 victory at no. 1 against Camacho.
"This is a credit to everyone on this team," said FAU head coach Mike Wheelen. "Since day one, our goal was to win the TAAC championship. The way the guys played this weekend shows how focused they were."
FAU, ranked 51st nationally and the top-seed, dominated play at the tournament by outscoring its three opponents 13-0. Including the TAAC Tournament, FAU outscored conference opponents this season by a staggering 53-2. Sunday's victory improves the Owls to 21-4 on the year and gives the team 15 wins in its last 16 matches.
Florida Atlantic will next take part in the NCAA Tournament beginning May 12. Location, seeding, and the Owls' first-round opponent will be determined later. It's the second straight appearance for FAU at the NCAA Tournament as the Owls received an at-large bid last season.
