FAU Splits a doubleheader with Troy State

BOCA RATON - Florida Atlantic University (28-16, 8-7) fell behind early in the first game of a doubleheader and was not able to recover to take a 9-3 loss to Troy State University (19-19, 7- 8). FAU captured the second with six runs in the sixth for a 7-6 victory and the TAAC series at 2- 1.
In game one, FAU matched the nine Trojan hits but came up short. LJ Biernbaum started the scoring for the Blue Wave in the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot down the right line. A double by Mike Valdes, a Shaen O'Connor walk, and a RBI double by Alex Fernandez brought the score to 7-2. Rusty Brown got the third run of the game when he grounded out to the shortstop to score O'Connor from third.
Danny Core took the loss for the Blue Wave after 4.3 innings of work, giving up seven runs on seven hits and striking out three. Chris Della Rocco gave up the games other two runs off two hits.
A six-run rally in the second game gave FAU its tenth come from behind victory this season. In the bottom of the sixth, of a seven inning game, Florida Atlantic used four singles, an O'Connor double and a mistake by TSU's third baseman to get six runs across the plate.
LJ Biernbaum went two-for-two in the game with his second home run in as many games and a base hit.
Travis NeSmith started the game for FAU but did not receive a decision as Matt O'Brien entered in the fourth inning to put in one inning of work. Chris Pillsbury (3-3) made his third appearance in as many games and earned the victory. Pillsbury gave up three hits, one run and struck out two in two innings of work. Jim Cooney earned his second save of the season by pitching the seventh and striking out two.
Florida Atlantic plays a three game series against conference opponent, Georgia State, this Friday and Saturday.
