FAU Wins Two at Speedline Tourney

TAMPA - Florida Atlantic University's softball team defeated both the University of Massachusetts and the University of Kansas in the first round of the USF "Speedline" Invitational. FAU defeated UMASS 6-0 and Kansas 6-5, a come from behind thriller. The Lady Owls improve to 17-6 and will play two on Friday.
Junior, Nicole Myers had huge day for the Lady Owls. She went 3-for-3 versus UMASS with a home run and a triple. On the mound, she threw four strong innings, striking out seven batters and giving up one hit. Kristie Picon came into the game in the fifth inning, pitching three innings, and struck out four. Michelle Shirah collected her first home run of the year and Annie Norton was 2-for-2.
The Lady Owls returned to the field for a match up with Kansas. FAU jumped to a 1-0 lead on a Myers solo home run in the bottom of the first. With the score 2-0, Kansas fought back to take a 5-2 lead off of Lady Owls starter Chris Sutcliffe. Sutcliffe gave way to Myers in the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs. The Lady Owls fought back and tied the game in the top of the fifth inning on Myers third home run of the day. Heather Wright drove in the deciding run with a bases loaded walk. On the day, Myers upped her record to 10-4 on the season by pitching 3 1/3 innings in relief. She struck out six batters and gave up two hits.
