Florida Atlantic University was defeated by visiting Samford University, 6- 3, Friday night in Boca Raton, FL. The game was the first of a three-game Trans America Athletic Conference series between the two.
FAU (22-14, 2-5 TAAC) trailed 2-1 in the middle of the fifth before taking the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning. L.J. Biernbaum and Shaen O'Connor each had run-scoring singles to give the Owls a 3-2 lead heading into the sixth.
The Bulldogs came back with a run in the sixth when Robert Evans scored while Sae Evans was thrown out in a run-down between first and second for the inning's final out. Samford regained the lead in the eighth on an RBI-single by Joe Denson to make it 4-3.
Samford (8-18, 2-5 TAAC) added insurance runs in the ninth on a two-out two-run homer by Robert Evans, giving the Bulldogs a 6-3 lead.
Petersen Benjamin (2-3) took the loss for FAU, allowing six runs on 12 hits in all nine innings of work. He struck out five and walked one.
Major Allred (4-4) picked up the win in relief, allowing one run on five hits in 4.2 innings. Samford outhit FAU 12-9.
The two teams will play Saturday in a 1:00pm doubleheader.
