Florida Atlantic University (6-4) won two games on the first day of action at the FAU "Worth" Invitational Friday in Boca Raton. The Lady Owls defeated FAMU 10-0 in the afternoon and knocked off #16 Florida State, 2-1, in 10 innings.
Against FSU, Michelle Shirah had a run-scoring single with no outs in the bottom of the 10th to score Kristin Gonzalez and give the Lady Owls the victory. FAU had taken an early 1-0 lead in the second before FSU tied it in the top of the third. Nicole Myers allowed just one run in 10 innings of work while striking out 18. With the win, Myers improved to 4-3 on the year.
Against FAMU, FAU needed just five innings to dispose of the Rattlerettes. Myers went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs as FAU banged out 10 hits. Kristie Picon got the victory, pitching five scoreless innings and allowing just three hits.
FAU next plays Illinois Saturday at 5pm and Maryland at 7pm as the tournament moves into day two.
