Florida Atlantic University's softball team swept a doubleheader Thursday night over Hofstra University 4-3 and 2-0. The Lady Owls improve their record to 4-4 on the season. While Hofstra fell to 0-9.
Diane Sanchez hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh to give the Lady Owls the victory. FAU was down 3-2 going into the bottom of the last inning. Jamie Sawyer breathed life into the game with a two-out single. She scored the tying run on the on Sanchez's homer a 2- 1 pitch over the right field fence. Starting pitcher Chris Sutcliffe (1-1) earned her first victory of the season with a complete game. She gave up just five hits and one of the two runs was earned.
The team's heroics began in the fourth with a RBI double by Michelle Shirah, bring the Lady Owls within one run, 2-1.
In the second game, Nicole Myers went 2-for-3 with two RBI singles to lead the Lady Owls to victory. Myers (3-3), earned her third win of the season by striking out 12 batters and allowing three hits in a complete game effort.
The Lady Owls will next play Florida A&M and Florida State. in the FAU Worth Invitational Tournament. FAU game times are at 3 pm and 7 pm. Other tournament teams include Maryland and Illinois. Games will be played all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the FAU Stadium. Admission is free of charge.
