Florida Atlantic University fell to Troy State University, 81-73, Thursday night in Troy, AL. Tamala Vaughn led FAU with a game-high 18 points as the Lady Owls dropped to 6-17 overall and 3-11 in the Trans America Athletic Conference. Troy State improved to 12-10 and 7-6 in the TAAC. TSU was led by Jennifer McInnis and Kim McGriff, who each scored 15.
FAU opened the game with a 19-9 lead, a run capped off by a Janka Deckerova three-pointer with 12:20 left in the half. A 21-8 run by the Lady Trojans over the next 8:44 gave TSU a 30-27 lead with 3:34 left in the first half. FAU closed on a 9-1 run to take a 36-31 halftime lead.
The Lady Owls scored the first bucket of the second half to take a 38-31 lead, which would turn out to be their largest lead of the second half. Troy State outscored FAU 23-6 over the next 6:09 to take a 54-44 lead with 13:37 to play. The Lady Trojans led by as many as 11 points with 12:25 left in the game.
The Lady Owls tried to battle back despite 19-percent shooting from three-point range. A jumper by DeeAnna Hanscom with 7:08 left pulled FAU to within 65-62. Trailing by six, FAU again cut the lead down to three, at 75-72, with a trey by LaTorria Matthews with 1:37 to play. That was as close as FAU would get as the Trojans outscored the Lady Owls 6-1 the rest of the way.
Overall, FAU shot just 31-percent for the game, including 6-of-31 from beyond the arc. TSU managed 42-percent from the field. FAU outrebounded TSU 61-50, including 28 offensive boards.
Matthews finished with 15 points, nine assists, and six rebounds while Ruta Griniute had a team-high nine rebounds to go along with four blocks and eight points. Janka Decekerova had nine for the FAU effort.
