BOCA RATON - Randy Beam has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball for Florida Atlantic University, announced John McCormack, FAU's Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator.
"Randy is a highly intelligent pitcher that will fit into our staff very nicely," says McCormack. "We see him as a rotation guy, but he can do a lot of things. He can pitch relief or close the game."
Beam is a 6-4, 190 pound left-handed pitcher from Manatee Community College and Sarasota, FL. He played his freshman JUCO season for Tim Hill at Manatee, where current FAU starter Chris Wailand played prior to joining FAU in 2001. At Manatee, Beam was named Fireman of the Year for the Suncoast Conference. He finished the season 5-1, with eight saves, and 41 strike outs in 40.3 innings of predominately relief work.
Beam comes from an area and from programs that are dotted with current and past FAU players. Prior to Manatee, Beam played for former "Big Leaguer" Don Robinson and the Bradenton Titans and was a teammate of FAU's current infielder Rust Brown. Tommy Murphy, FAU's highest June draftee, also played for Don Robinson and the Bradenton Titans.
Beam is one of six players to sign with FAU baseball in the early signing period.
