In the second day of action at the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, the University of Central Florida (20-6) defeated Florida Atlantic University (13-16) in five games to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament (28-30, 16-30, 30-24, 30-25, 15-9).
FAU jumped out to a two game lead by out-hitting the Knights. In game two the Lady Owls held UCF to a .000 hitting percentage to take the game easily. The Lady Owls felt confident going into game three knowing that they were one game away from their third conference title in four years. But the team had been through a grueling five-game match against the no. 1 seed Georgia State last night and began to look tired.
"I was very happy with the first two games," said FAU coach Jody Brown. "But we started to run out of gas in the third game both physically and psychologically."
UCF made a rotation adjust entering the third game to create different match-ups, which created higher hitting percentages in the final three-games for UCF.
Coach Brown said, "They held together after being down 2-0. I think they did a great job and earned every point."
Ashley Bodily tried to keep FAU in the game as she collected 14 of her team-high 23 kills in the last three games. Posting a .465 hitting percentage on the day earned her All-Tournament honors. Jeana Boyle also earned honors as she posted 52 assists, five kills, nine digs, and two blocks.
The Lady Owls held a 7-5 lead in game-three but UCF fought back to tie it at nine when Jenny Frank and Shelly Driggers combined on a block. FAU would never lead in the match again as the Knights won their eighth Atlantic Sun title.
