ORLANDO, FL -
Two big runs to close out each half helped propel the University of Central Florida over Florida Atlantic University, 76-69, Saturday afternoon in Orlando, FL. UCF outscored FAU (3-9, 0-3 Trans America Athletic Conference) 11-2 to close the game. Tamala Vaughn led FAU in the loss with a game-high 16 points to go along with 11 rebounds. LaTorria Matthews had 15, while Chantale Jones also scored 15 in her first game of the season.
Midway through the second half, FAU trailed 61-47 before going on an 18-2 run to take a brief 67-65 lead. The run was highlighted by two treys by Matthews that was helped by furious full court pressure by FAU. UCF ended the first half on a 10-0 run to take a 40-30 halftime lead.
"I was so proud of the way we played today," said FAU head coach Chancellor Dugan. "I told the players after the game that, despite the loss, they played harder today than they have all year long."
The game marked the return of Jones to the lineup after the junior guard was academically ineligible for the first semester. "Chantale really elevates our play," said Dugan. "Her intensity adds another dimension to this team."
UCF (5-7, 3-0) was led by Adrienne Billings, Marvelous Washington, and Khaliah Guillory, who each scored 12 points.
FAU was outrebounded 54-30 as UCF collected 25 offensive rebounds. The Lady Owls forced the Golden Knights into 31 turnovers.
FAU next hosts Mercer January 11 at 7:00pm.
