Florida Atlantic University was defeated by Jacksonville University, 71-55, Saturday night in a Trans America Athletic Conference contest in Jacksonville, FL. The loss drops FAU to 5-16 overall and 4-6 in the TAAC while JU improves to 13-6 overall and 6-4 in the TAAC. Robert Williams had his second double-double of the season for the Owls, with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. Shawn Platts led JU with 20 points. Kris Hunter and Kevin Shepperd each had 16.
The FAU freshmen tandem of Jeff Cowans and Earnest Crumbley, which came into the game averaging a combined 26.7 points per game, was held to a total of 15 points. Cowans finished with 10 while Crumbley was held to one field goal and five points.
A layup by JU's Brandon Williams with 15:03 left to play in the first half gave the Dolphins the lead for good at 10-9. JU continued to increase its advantage throughout the first half and led 33-19 at the half. JU held FAU to 6-for-30 shooting (20-percent) in the first half.
The second half started with a 15-9 run by JU to give the Dolphins a 48-28 lead with 11:49 to play. The closest the Owls could get the rest of the way was a 12-point deficit on three separate occasions.
For the game, JU outshot FAU 39-percent to 30-percent. The Owls won the battle of the boards with a 48-38 advantage. Individually, Daryl Dingle also had a strong showing with eight points and seven rebounds in the Owls' effort.
FAU next plays at Stetson on Monday night in DeLand, FL.
