An 11-0 run late in the second half helped Jacksonville University to a 69-60 victory over visiting Florida Atlantic University Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Lady Owls dropped to 4-12 overall and 1-6 in Trans America Athletic Conference play. The loss also overshadowed a team-high 15 points by LaTorria Matthews which gives her 1,002 for her FAU career.
FAU held a 33-26 halftime lead and built a 39-28 lead with 16:40 remaining in the game before JU (6-10, 2-5 TAAC) went on the first of its two big runs in the second half. The Dolphins outscored the Lady Owls 12-0 over the next 4:50 to take a 40-39 lead with 11:50 left.
With 8:09 left, Matthews connected for a three-pointer which gave her 1,000 points for her career. The trey also gave FAU a 48-46 lead. The Dolphins then countered with an 11-0 run to give JU a 57-48 lead with 3:08 remaining.
Kristy Halvorsen was the only other Lady Owl to score in double figures with 14 points. She led FAU with seven rebounds. Amber Hallman and Kat Sungy each led JU with 14 points. Sungy also had a game-high 17 rebounds. Angela Walker also finished with a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
JU outshot FAU 39-percent to 32-percent while outrebounding the Lady Owls 57-39. FAU shot just 26-percent in the second half.
