TAMPA -
Florida Atlantic University (5-3) was defeated 4-33 in double overtime by the University of South Florida Wednesday night in Tampa. The Lady Bulls scored the winning goal with 12 minutes left in the second overtime period.
USF controlled the first half, taking a 2-0 advantage into the break. Christina Gaudion scored the match's fist goal at 25:09 while Tia Opliger put USF up 2-0 at 28:41 with the first of her two goals on the night.
The Lady Bulls maintained their two-goal advantage until 57-13 when FAU's Lauren Manfrass scored. It was Manfrass's third goal of the year and it cut the deficit to 2-1.
Two minutes later, Opliger scored again on a penalty kick to give USF a 3-1 lead.
With 19:28 left in regulations, FAU's Lisanne Peart scored her team-leading seventh goal of the year to cut the USF lead to one goal. Manfrass assisted Peart on the goal.
Trailing 3-2, FAU finally tied the match on a goal by Denise Peters with 3:27 left in the second half. It was the first goal of the season for Peters who was assisted by Rhonda Jones.
Both teams played a scoreless first overtime period before USF finally won with a goal by Michelle Upham three minutes into the second time.
FAU played without Melissa bobby, their second leading scorer and last season's Trans America Athletic conference player-of-the-year, due to mono. USF outshot FAU 21-13.
"We were able to come back from being down 2-0 and 3-1," said FAU head coach Brian Dooley. "To see them battle back from those deficits on the road is encouraging in itself."
