BOCA RATON, FL -
The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team downed McNeese State University 6-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Owls scored four goals in a six minute span late in the second half to put the game away. Lauren Lucena and Melissa Bobby scored two goals each and Lindsey Noviske added three assists.
FAU (2-0) scored late in the first half on a 20-yard free kick by Tracy Drost. MSU (0-2) tied the match 15 minutes into the second half on a right post kick by Nicci Delfatti.
With the game tied 1-1, FAU took the lead for good on Lucena's first goal 18 minutes into the second half. Lucena scored again with 13 minutes left to give FAU a 3-1 lead. Two minutes later, Bobby scored the first of her two goals with two minutes of each other. Christie Pollock capped off the scoring with her first goal of the season with just under seven minutes to play.
"the team was persistent, "said FAU head coach Brian Dooley. "We were frustrated and struggling, but finally the gates opened."
Through FAU's first two matches, Bobby and Lucena each have three goals.
FAU is off to its best start in five years as the 1995 team also started 2-0. The Lady Owls' six goals are the most since September 30, 1995.
"The little mistakes we have gotten away with in the first two matches, we won't on Wednesday," said Dooley. "Miami will convert those so we need to play a clean game."
