BOCA RATON, FL -
Florida Atlantic University's men's basketball team ran into a well coached team, in a 95-68 loss to Birmingham Southern College, Monday night. The loss drops the Owls record to 2-7 overall while BSC improved to 5-4.
"Birmingham Southern is a very good team, very well coached and they out executed us," said Sidney Green, FAU's head coach.
The Panthers jumped to an 11-2 lead and took advantage of the Owls playing without rebounding leader Raheim Brown, who averaged 7.1 rebounds coming into the game. FAU evened the game but saw FAU even the score at 18.
"I'm startled about our offensive execution," added Green. "I sensed the team was flat in the locker room, before the game started. I asked Raheim to dress, despite his injury, just to lift the team's spirits. But, instead of putting the nail in the coffin when the score was tied, we conceded."
FAU's offense was led by Earnest Crumbley who tallied 14 points. Tyler Zornes also scored in double digits with 12 while defensively, Nick Neumann added nine points and led the squad with seven rebounds. Brown, who was expected to have knee surgery last Friday but, was forced to reschedule due to a fever played 11 minutes, scored four points and grabbed two rebounds. Newcomer, Dave Richardson came off the bench in his first collegiate game to score four points and dish four assists.
BSC was led by Joe Ransom who scored 29 points to lead all scorers. Rashard Willie scored 17 while Neal Broome and Adrian Pryor had 13 and 12, respectively.
FAU will next play Clemson University 11 am, Wednesday, in San Juan, Puerto Rico as part of the San Juan Shootout. The tournament's other possible opponents include the University of Cincinnati, Youngstown State, Northern Iowa, Washington, Alabama or host American Puerto Rico.
