SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO - Florida Atlantic University (2-8) was defeated by Clemson University 94-81 Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the Puerto Rico Holiday Shootout in San Juan, P.R. Pierre Downing led a contingent of five Owls in double figures as the freshman scored a career-high 23 points. Tyler Zornes, Earnest Crumbley, Jeff Cowans, and Daryl Dingle also scored at least 10 points in the loss.
The Tigers took a 22-13 lead with 10:19 left in the first half before the Owls were able to fight back and tie the game at 31. Clemson then went on a 16-9 run to close out the half with a 47-40 lead.
Zornes finished with 12 points, all in the second half and all from beyond the arc. Crumbley and Cowans each had 11 while Dingle had 10. Dingle also led the Owls with eight rebounds.
The Tigers only outshot the Owls 47-percent to 46-percent. However, FAU was just 24-percent (6-of-25) from beyond the arc while Clemson went 11-of-29 (38-percent). The Tigers also outrebounded the Owls 45-37.
FAU next plays Youngstown State Thursday at 11:00am EST in the second round.
