CORAL GABLES, FL -
Florida Atlantic University was defeated by the University of Miami, 87-50, Monday night in Coral Gables, FL. The loss drops FAU to 0-2 on the season. Ruta Griniute led the Lady Owls with a game-high 14 points. Amanda Papuga led the Hurricanes with 13.
FAU never led in the contest as UM (1-0) forced FAU into 42 turnovers on the night. UM jumped out to a 21-4 lead over the first 8:34 before a layup by Kristy Halvorsen stopped a scoring drought that spanned nearly ten minutes. The Hurricanes led at the half 45-20.
The Hurricanes started the second half much the same way they did the first, outscoring the lady Owls 25-5 over the first 11:06. Miami's largest lead came at 76-29 with 5:37 to play before FAU finished the game on a 21-11 run.
"Our lack of experience showed up again," said FAU head coach Chancellor Dugan. "It's something we will definitely work on, and we'll get better. (The players) have got to feel a sense of urgency that they've got to start working harder in practice, and (the coaching staff) will remedy that."
Jill Banse also finished in double-figures, scoring 10 points with two field goals from beyond the arc. The Hurricanes outshot the Lady Owls 42-percent to 26-percent.
FAU next plays Friday night in the first round of the Southwest Texas State Classic against Morehead State.
